History
Carbon dioxide is the first gas to be identified as a separate substance. In 1640, a chemist named John Baptiste von Helmont observed that the mass of ash left over from burning charcoal indoors was less than the original amount of coal. So he concluded that the rest of the coal would become invisible matter, which he called gas. The properties of this substance were later studied in 1750 by a physicist named Joseph Black. In 1772, the English chemist Joseph Priestley published an article explaining the production of carbon dioxide during the process of pouring sulfuric acid on gypsum.
Safety and classification
Carbon dioxide is a non-combustible and asphyxiant gas in high. It is physiologically active and can affect blood circulation and respiration. Moderate exposures may cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness, burning and runny nose, burning, rapid breathing and increased heart rate, excessive salivation, vomiting, and anesthesia. Its presence in the absence of oxygen is deadly.
Compatibility
It is incompatible with materials such as alkali, alkaline earth metals, metal acetylide, chromium, titanium (550), uranium (750) and magnesium (775) and should be avoided. You should also avoid carbon dioxide exposure to electrical discharge or high temperatures. It is also incompatible with polyethylene and butyl rubber.

Carbon dioxide is recovered from many different sources. It is obtained as an off-gas from fermentation processes, lime-stone kilns, natural CO₂ springs, as well as gas streams from chemical and petrochemical operations. Recently, CO₂ is also recaptured from the off-gas from power plants.
Applications
Carbon dioxide is used extensively as a neutralizing agent for pH control, for example, in cement curing water treatment and in many other commercially important chemical applications.
Carbon dioxide is used in many consumer products ranging from aerosol packaging to air guns that require pressurised gas because it is inexpensive and non-flammable; in the operation of pneumatic equipment and for the transfer of hazardous and flammable liquids.
Owing to its stimulating effect on the nerve centres, carbon dioxide is employed in medicine in mixtures with oxygen, for reanimating victims of asphyxiation. It also serves in the treatment of certain skin affections.
Carbon dioxide, when mixed with helium and nitrogen, is used as the active medium in carbon dioxide lasers.
Carbon dioxide is used as an inerting agent for various mild steel welding operations, often in combination with argon.
Carbon dioxide is used for fire extinguishing.
Carbon dioxide is often used in combination with ethylene oxide for sterilizing purposes.
